UN: world hunger was dramatically worse in pandemic year

By FRANCES D’EMILIO and EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press4 hours, 38 minutes ago

ROME (AP) — The United Nations on Monday lamented a “dramatic worsening” of world hunger last year, saying much of that is likely connected to the pandemic, and it urged billions of dollars to save millions of people from starving.

A report issued jointly by five U.N. agencies said hunger outpaced population growth in 2020, with nearly 10% of all people estimated to be undernourished.

It said the sharpest rise in hunger came in Africa, where 21% of the people — 282 million — are estimated to be undernourished.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the new “tragic data” shows that between 720 million and 811 million people in the world faced hunger last year — as many as 161 million more than in 2019.

More than 2.3 billion people, which represents 30% of the global population, lacked year-round access to adequate food, according to the report. This indicator, known as the prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity, leaped in one year as much as in the five previous years combined.

“Despite a 300% increase in global food production since the mid-1960s, malnutrition is a leading factor contributing to reduced life expectancy,” the U.N. chief said. “In a world of plenty, we have no excuse for billions of people to lack access to a healthy diet. This is unacceptable.”

Emily Farr of the humanitarian organization Oxfam said the pandemic was the last straw for millions of people already battered by the impacts of conflict, economic shocks and a worsening climate crisis.

Children paid a high price, with 149 million of those younger than 5 estimated to have stunted growth since they are too short for their age, and more than 45 million children are too thin for their height, the report said. It also noted the paradoxical problem of nearly 39 million children being overweight.

A full 3 billion adults and children remain locked out of healthy diets, largely due to excessive costs,? the U.N. agencies said, and COVID-19 made things worse.

“In many parts of the world, the pandemic has triggered brutal recessions and jeopardized access to food,? the United Nations said in a summary of its findings. ”Yet even before the pandemic, hunger was spreading; progress on malnutrition lagged.”

“Disturbingly, in 2020 hunger shot up in both absolute and proportional terms, outpacing population growth,” the report’s authors concluded. The report said some 9.9% of the world’s people were estimated to have been undernourished last year, compared to 8.4% in 2019.

Geographically, in addition to the surge of Africans facing hunger, more than half the undernourished people — 418 million — live in Asia, while 60 million live in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the report.

Oxfam’s Farr said the new figures “are a somber reminder of how broken our global food and economic systems are.”

“More than half the world’s population did not have social protection to cope with the adverse effects of the pandemic,” she said. “Small farmers were forced to watch their crops rot during the pandemic, even when global food prices rose by 40%, while the biggest food companies have amassed over $10 billion of additional revenues last year.”

The United Nations said the pandemic undercut a key U.N. goal of achieving zero hunger by 2030. Based on current trends, it estimates that the goal will be “missed by a margin of nearly 660 million people,” and that some 30 million of that figure “may be linked to the pandemic’s lasting effects.”

Guterres said he is convening a global Food Systems Summit during this September’s annual meeting of world leaders at the General Assembly “to urgently make a change.” He said a pre-summit meeting in Rome at the end of this month is to work out “how we must address hunger, the climate emergency, incredible inequality and conflict, by transforming our food systems.”

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report was prepared by U.N. agencies including the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Program and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. The other two agencies were the the United Nations Children’s Fund, commonly known as UNICEF, which is based in New York, and the World Health Organization, or WHO, headquartered in Geneva.

Among the U.N.’s recommendations was one calling for strengthening “the resilience of the most vulnerable to economic adversity,” such as through programs to lessen the impact “pandemic-style shocks” or steep food price increases.

Maximo Torero, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s chief economist, said removing 100 million people from chronic undernourishment would require an additional $14 billion a year until 2030 — and to achieve the goal of zero hunger by 2030 “we were talking about $40 billion.”

Hamas arrests Gaza peace activist, wants endless war with Israel – Business Insider

• A Gazan peace activist set up a Zoom chat between Israelis and Palestinians. Hamas arrested him for it, and now his family doesn’t know where he is.

• Hamas has for years imprisoned, tortured, and murdered so-called “collaborators” with Israel, as well as critics of their abuse and corruption.

• To be very clear, Israel has a moral imperative as a democracy to work toward ending its more than a half-century-long occupation of the Palestinian people.

• But any honest analysis of the tragedy that is the status quo between Israel and the Palestinians needs to always take into account what Hamas is: a fascist theocracy that exists to be at war.

Even in the midst of a pandemic,Hamas will do anything to ensure the Palestinian people never make peace with Israel.

The Sunni Islamist militant group that controls the Gaza Strip and is designated as a terrorist organization by the US, has for years imprisoned, tortured, and murdered so-called “collaborators” with Israel, as well as critics of their abuse and corruption, according to Amnesty International.

None of this has changed during the coronavirus pandemic, as Hamas continues to use brute force to snuff out any dissent or rapprochement with Israelis by its own citizens.

Hamas considers Zoom chats between Gazans and Israelis “treason”

The Gaza Youth Committee is a pro-peace activist group and member of the Alliance for Middle East Peace. The Committee has undertaken activities to try and unite Israelis and Palestinians, including previously-staged bicycle “Rides for Peace” with people on either side of the Gaza border.

They’ve also initiated video chats between Palestinians and Israelis called “Skype with Your Enemy.” Last week over 200 people on both sides of the Israel-Gaza divide participated in an English-language Zoom chat initiated by the Gaza Youth Committee.

But a Palestinian journalist took to Facebook to object to the outreach effort and tagged several Hamas officials in a post. In short order, the Youth Committee’s leader, Rami Aman, as well as several other Palestinian participants, were arrested by Hamas.

In a statement, Hamas said Aman had been charged with the crime of “normalization” with Israel, which it also reportedly likened to “espionage” and “treason.”

Human Rights Watch reported Tuesday that Aman’s family has not heard from him since his arrest.

It’s important to remember in the context of the failure of Middle East peace efforts, that this is who Hamas is.

Israel’s expansion of settlements and annexation of land is an impediment to peace, but Hamas won’t make peace under any circumstances

Since 2007, the people of the Gaza Strip have lived under an Egypt/Israel-imposed blockade, after Hamas took control of the region in a bloody civil war with Fatah, the political party that dominates the Palestinian Authority and presides over the West Bank.

Hamas is primarily funded by the government of Iran, does not recognize Israel, and only in 2017 removed from its charter a call for the destruction of Israel (the charter still pledges “armed struggle” against Israel).

When the horrific semi-regular wars between Israel and Hamas break out, the brutality visited upon civilians is a moral failing of both parties.

Hamas’ tactics include indiscriminate firing of rockets into Israel, and the use of civilian population centers as launching areas.

To be very clear, Israel has a moral imperative as a democracy to work toward ending its more than a half-century long occupation of the Palestinian people. And over the past decade, it has failed to take legitimate efforts to do so.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has in recent years demonstrated an inclination to do the exact opposite of working for peace. His government continues to build settlements, partners with Israel’s equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan, and takes steps toward permanent annexation of land that had been long considered a starting point in negotiations for an Israeli disengagement with the Palestinians.

This is not to make any direct equivalence, or to weigh the sins of one side against the other. But peace can’t be imposed, it requires painful sacrifice between both parties, and the support of its citizenry.

Last year, Hamas staged a brutal crackdown on civilian protesters and journalists, detaining over 1,000 people in the process. These stories don’t get a tremendous amount of play in the US, and part of the reason for that is how tightly Hamas controls the messaging out of Gaza.

And now, in the middle of a pandemic, Hamas is trying to stamp out any embers that might spark an interest among Gazan citizens to make peace with Israel.

That’s why any honest analysis of the human rights tragedy that is the status quo between Israel and the Palestinians needs to always take into account what Hamas is: a fascist theocracy that exists to be at war.

The Nations Are Planning For War Outside The Temple Walls (Revelation 11)

Hamas-affiliated Humat al Aqsa promotes its joint military operations with Gaza’s militant groups

By Joe Truzman | April 15, 2020 | Joe.Truzman@longwarjournal.org | @Jtruzmah

Humat al Aqsa (Defenders of al Aqsa)

Humat al Aqsa (HAA), a Gaza-based group that has long been suspected of being founded, directed and funded by senior Hamas political leader Fathi Hamad, recently promoted joint military operations with militant groups in the Gaza Strip on its social networking platforms.

HAA was established in April 2006, one year before Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip from its rival Fatah.

Hamad’s involvement stemmed from a June 2011 indictment against a member of the group said “the offshoot enjoyed funding directed by no other than Fathi Hamad – Hamas’ interior minister in Gaza – who is known to be closely affiliated with the group’s military wing.”

Humat al Aqsa and al Qassam Brigades’ 2008 operation

In recent social media posts, the group touted its joint operations with Hamas’ military wing, al Qassam Brigades. The most notable being an April 2008 operation against Israel’s former security minister Avi Dichter whose convoy was attacked while it traveled near the Gaza border.

On the April 8 anniversary of the attack, HAA published a video releasing the name of one of the attackers of the convoy, Abdullah Hassan al Za’aneen, who was later killed after being targeted by an IDF drone in 2012.

Additionally, HAA revealed the role of Hamas’ late military chief Ahmed Jabari in the 2008 attack.

“We do not forget the great role of the martyr commander, Ahmed al Jabari, who blessed and contributed to the support of the operation, and who praised the performance of the martyr al Za’aneen, who executed the operation with courage,” the statement read.

The attack failed to hurt Dichter but was successful at showcasing the group’s intelligence capability in locating where Dichter would be on the day of the attack.

Other recent military activities conducted by the group include its participation in several short lived conflicts between the IDF and other militant groups over the past two years. One of the group’s fighters, Imad Muhammad Nasir, was killed by the IDF in May 2019 as he attempted to launch rockets in the northern Gaza Strip.

Explosive-laden balloons launched by HAA

Furthermore, the group published evidence of its participation in a low-tech pressure campaign against the Israeli government that began in early 2018 with the March of Return.Over a two-year period, border units affiliated with militant groups launched explosive-laden balloons toward Israel. HAA admitted to the activity, an act that other militant groups have hinted but have never publicly acknowledged.

In 2019, HAA publicly denounced claims that Hamad was the organization’s leader, saying “the movement does not belong to anyone and enjoys complete independence, whether in the political circles, or even in military action.”

Despite the denial, the creation of an organization like HAA serves Hamas’ military operational needs as it attempts to maintain the facade of a pragmatic organization to the international community. It permits Hamas to carry out attacks against Israel while maintaining deniability that it is not involved in terrorism against Israeli civilians which in turn serves its strategic goals.

Additionally, HAA bears many of the same operational hallmarks as its militant counterparts in the Gaza Strip including an armament of rockets, IED’s, small arms and specialized military units. However, HAA does not share the U.S. State Department’s designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) despite the fact it behaves identical to Palestinian militant groups on the list.

Here is the Sixth Seal Zone (Revelation 6:12)

Here are the hidden earthquake zones you don’t know about

April 13, 20204 Min Read

Let’s get able to (probably) rumble.

A report this week from the Los Angeles Instances took a have a look at what a devastating earthquake may do to Los Angeles — and the classes to be discovered from the calamitous 6.three magnitude quake in 2011 that every one however flattened Christchurch, New Zealand.

However whereas People are conscious of the San Andreas fault and the seismic exercise in California, which has wreaked havoc in San Francisco and Los Angeles, there are different, lesser-known fault traces in the United States that fly dangerously underneath the radar. These cracks in the crust have prompted appreciable harm in the previous — and scientists say will achieve this once more.

Virginia Seismic Zone

Richmond, VirginiaShutterstock

In 2011, New Yorkers had been jolted by a 5.eight magnitude earthquake that shook the East Coast from New Hampshire all the approach down by means of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The quake’s epicenter was in Mineral, Virginia, about 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., and was so highly effective that Union Station, the Pentagon and the Capitol Constructing had been all evacuated.

The quake woke lots of people in the northeast as much as the Virginia Seismic Zone (VSZ) under the Mason Dixon — and the consequential results it may have on main cities alongside the East Coast. The final time the VSZ prompted a lot chaos was in 1867 when it launched an earthquake of 5.6-magnitude — the strongest in Virginia’s historical past.

Ramapo Fault Zone

Shutterstock

It’s not simply the Virginia Seismic Zone New Yorkers have to fret about. Nearer to house is the Ramapo Fault Zone, which stretches from New York by means of New Jersey to Pennsylvania and was most energetic tens of millions of years in the past throughout the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. It’s answerable for a number of of the fault traces that run by means of New York Metropolis, together with one underneath 125th Avenue. In line with a New York Publish report in 2017, “On common, the area has witnessed a reasonable quake (about a 5.zero on the Richter scale) each hundred years. The final one was in 1884. Seismologists say we will anticipate the subsequent one any day now.” Enjoyable occasions!

The New Madrid Seismic Zone

This 150 mile-long sequence of faults stretches underneath 5 states: Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, and is answerable for 4 of the largest earthquakes in the historical past of the United States, which befell over three months from December 1811 and February 1812. The quakes had been so robust the mighty Mississippi River flowed backward for 3 days. Fortunately, the space was not as populated as it’s now, so the harm was restricted. Nonetheless, a FEMA report launched in 2008 warned {that a} quake now could be catastrophic and end in “the highest financial losses as a consequence of a pure catastrophe in the United States.”

The Northern Sangre de Cristo Fault

Downtown Trinidad, Colorado Shutterstock

In 2011, a magnitude 5.three quake hit Trinidad, Colorado, one other space that has seen little seismic exercise on such a big scale. In line with the Colorado Division of Homeland Safety and Emergency Administration, The Sangre de Cristo Fault, which lies at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains alongside the japanese fringe of the San Luis Valley, and the Sawatch Fault, which runs alongside the japanese fringe of the Sawatch Vary, are “two of the most distinguished probably energetic faults in Colorado” and that “Seismologists predict that Colorado will once more expertise a magnitude 6.5 earthquake at some unknown level in the future.”

The Cascadia Subduction Zone

One in every of the most probably harmful fault traces lies north of California, stretching between Oregon and Washington. Main cities like Portland, Seattle and Vancouver lie alongside the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which scientists say has the functionality of a 9.zero or 10 magnitude earthquake — 16 occasions extra highly effective than the 1906 quake which ravaged San Francisco. A quake of this magnitude would have devastating penalties on infrastructure and will probably set off large tsunamis. The risk is so nice, the BBC even did a nifty video on the potential MegaQuake risk.

Inspector General report: Impacts of Indian Point gas pipeline wasn’t properly examined

Posted: Feb 29, 2020 7:29 PM MST Updated: Feb 29, 2020 7:29 PM MST

The Office of the Inspector General says the safety impacts of a natural gas pipeline near Indian Point was not properly examined, causing some concerns in the Buchanan community.

Kelly Ingraham-Friedman is among the residents worried about living so close to the pipeline, which was built in 2015.

“It’s definitely, definitely concerning,” Ingraham-Friedman said. “We worry about our kids who are in the school district.”

The Inspector General report showed that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission failed to properly analyze safety concerns before the pipeline’s approval and installation. Many are calling on the commission to address the findings and to create a plan to keep residents safe.

According to Westchester County Executive George Latimer, the long-term environmental and health impacts are unknown.

“I think right now the burden is on the [Nuclear Regulatory Commission] to defend the decisions they made and how they implemented it and to do that in a public fashion,” Latimer said.

The Village of Buchanan Mayor Theresa Knickerbocker is also requesting that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission immediately hold a public meeting to address the findings.

Despite pandemic, Israeli forces drop herbicide on Gaza and shoot at fishermen

KateApril 11, 2020

PCHR: In new Israeli violation, Israeli naval forces wound 2 fishermen in northern Gaza sea

BEIT LAHIA 9 Apr — Israeli naval forces continue their attacks against Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Sea preventing them from sailing and fishing freely, accessing the zones rich in fish, despite the fact that fishermen posed no threat to the lives of Israeli naval forces deployed in Gaza waters … According to the investigations of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 07:50 on Thursday, 09 April 2020, Israeli gunboats stationed northwest of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza Strip chased Palestinian fishing boats sailing within the allowed fishing area (3 nautical miles) and opened fire at a fishing boat. As a result, two fishermen, Obai ‘Adel Mohamed Jarbou‘ (21) and Ahmed ‘Abed al-Fattah Ahmed al-Sharfi (23), were shot and injured with rubber-coated steel bullets. The young men, from al-Shati’ [‘Beach’] camp in Gaza City, were taken to the Indonesian Hospital, where their injuries were classified as minor. It should be noted that Israeli gunboats conduct daily chases of Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip, and open fire at them in order to terrify them and prevent them from sailing and accessing the zones rich in fish.

The latest Israeli naval forces’ attack was on Wednesday, 08 April 2020, as Israeli gunboats stationed northwest of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza Strip, chased Palestinian fishing boats sailing within the allowed fishing area (3 nautical miles) and opened fire at a fishing boat. As a result, a fisherman was shot and injured.

PCHR: In New Israeli Violation, Israeli Naval Forces Wound 2 Fishermen in Northern Gaza Sea

Report: 17 Israeli violations against Gaza fishermen

6 Apr by Ali Salam — The Gaza-based Palestinian Agricultural Union issued on Sunday a report outlining the amount of Israeli naval forces violations against Gaza fishermen, during March of 2020. According to the Department of Lobbying and Advocacy of the Palestinian Agricultural Union, Israeli naval forces, off the coast of Gaza, committed 17 violations against Gaza fishermen, last month. The department’s records suggested that among those violations were opening heavy fire, unleashing waste water cannons and ruining fishing nets. The violations also included damaging two boats, belonging to two different fishermen from Gaza City. The non-governmental agricultural organization also noted that the recent amount of violations against fishermen came while Palestinian fishermen and many other categories of Palestinian workers are coping with the spread of the coronavirus worldwide, by following the precautions put forth by concerned health bodies, as many of those fishermen stay indoors to protect themselves. Compliance by fishermen has been noted widely, despite the fact that fishing is the only source of income for them to provide for their families, with the Gaza Strip having been subject to a crippling Israeli blockade, for 13 years now.

Rights groups call on Israel to halt herbicide spraying in Gaza Strip during coronavirus outbreak

HAIFA, Tuesday, April 7, 2020 (WAFA) – Gisha–Legal Center for Freedom of Movement, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and Adalah–The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel sent an urgent letter to Israeli authorities yesterday demanding an immediate halt to Israel’s aerial herbicide spraying in the eastern Gaza Strip as Palestinians in Gaza desperately fight to keep coronavirus at bay and prevent its outbreak into the wider population. On Sunday morning, Israeli crop-duster planes flew along the perimeter fence separating Gaza and Israel, spraying chemicals assumed to be herbicides. The spraying was conducted sporadically starting at 6:30 AM and lasted for almost three hours, first spraying the eastern parts of the Gaza City district, before commencing southward over the eastern areas of the Central Gaza district. The sprayed chemicals reached Palestinian farmlands in both districts, and the impact on crops will become apparent in the coming days. Palestinian farmers who were working the land east of the perimeter fence on Sunday morning told Al Mezan that at about 6:20 AM, they saw plumes of black smoke emanating from Israel’s side of the fence, a practice used by Israel in the past as a means to discern wind direction. A few minutes later, crop-duster planes flew along the perimeter fence spraying chemicals believed to be herbicides that were carried by the winds into the Gaza Strip. Similar rounds of spraying were carried out earlier this year, 14-16 January 2020, in areas adjacent to the fence from Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza to Rafah in the south …  Al Mezan’s documentation however indicated that the sprayed chemicals damaged crops at a distance of at least 600 meters from the perimeter fence, with the total area of damage to cultivated land surpassing 280 hectares. At least 350 Palestinian farmers sustained financial losses, collectively exceeding $1 million, from the January spraying ….data collected on the impact of aerial herbicide spraying since the practice was first recorded in 2014 strongly indicates that the spraying poses a serious threat to the right to life as it directly undermines food security and health

Rocket Fired From Gaza Into Southern Israel During Coronavirus Pandemic

March 27, 2020

A rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip toward southern Israel on March 27, prompting the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to retaliate later in the day.

The IDF tweeted that thousands of Israelis are currently in bomb shelters and that the IDF is responding with strikes against Hamas posts in Gaza.

“As the world fights COVID-19, we must also fight terror,” the IDF tweeted. “And we’ll defeat them. Both.”

According to The Times of Israel, the rocket was fired toward Sderot but landed in an open field and didn’t cause any damage. The IDF holds Hamas responsible for all rocket attacks emanating from Gaza.

The American Jewish Committee tweeted, “Take a moment to imagine this: You’re in quarantine sheltering from a pandemic. Then a siren goes off, warning that a rocket could be heading right at you. What do you do? Stay or run to the bomb shelter? In Israel, this is not a hypothetical. It is happening right now.”

Hamas Threatens to Suffocate Six-Million Israelis Outside the Temple Walls

Hamas Threatens to Suffocate Six-Million Israelis

By JNS April 6, 2020 , 3:19 pm

He shall be a wild ass of a man; His hand against everyone, And everyone’s hand against him; He shall dwell alongside of all his kinsmen.” Genesis 16:12 (The Israel Bible™)

(April 6, 2020 / MEMRI) Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar threatened last week that if Gazans start dying of COVID-19 due to a lack of ventilators, the terrorist group would make “six million settlers unable to breathe.”

Speaking with Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV and Shehab News Agency on April 2, Sinwar addressed Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennett, who he said had a “Merchant of Venice mentality” along with the rest of Israel. Bennett should read the prophecies contained in Chapter 17 of the Book of Ezekiel, which are “about to come true for the Zionist entity,” said the Hamas leader.

“I would like to use this opportunity to say a couple of words to Zionist Defense Minister Bennett: I refer you to the Book of Ezekiel, Chapter 17, to read what awaits you, and what awaits your filthy [Zionist] entity, because the kind of language that you use can be expected only from someone who has a Merchant of Venice mentality.

“The Merchant of Venice gave people loans, and when the time came and they could not repay their debts, he started to cut off their flesh as payment for the money he had given them. This is the common practice of Bennett, and of the entire Zionist system that has occupied our land. I refer him to the Book of Ezekiel, Chapter 17, about what awaits them from this pandemic and from other things.”

Sinwar emphasized that Hamas does not need any aid from Israel to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, and has been working “day and night” towards the liberation of Palestine. The coronavirus pandemic, he said, had been sent by God as retribution for the move of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and because God is “not pleased about the way the things in this world are run.”

“As for the question about whether we need them to give us anything—we don’t need anything from the occupation,” he said. “But I say this loud and clear: God forbid, if a time comes when we have no choice but to watch our citizens breathe their final breaths, and when there are no ventilators—I say to Bennett that we will make six million Israeli settlers unable to breathe.”

With regard to the United States, Sinwar said the pandemic was God’s punishment for U.S. President Donald Trump declaring Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

“When I saw Trump signing his decision to allocate $2.2 trillion for the coronavirus response, I recalled how he had signed in the same manner his decision to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. I said then: You and the Americans will pay the price for this unjust and criminal decision. Today, our Lord, by means of this virus, which cannot be seen by many telescopes and microscopes … This virus can only be seen by a small number of them, but it has entered all the cities of the world, where curfews have been declared, because our Lord is not pleased about the way things in this world are run.”

Hamas Threatens Israel From Outside the Temple Walls (Revelation 11)

Hamas: If Gazans die from coronavirus, Israelis will be unable to breathe

Sinwar also declared that the coronavirus pandemic was retribution for the decision by President Donald Trump to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May 2018.

Hamas’s leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, threatened over the weekend that if Gazans start dying as a result of not having enough ventilators,Hamas will make six million Israeli settlers unable to breathe, in an interview with Arab media last week.

Speaking with Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV and Shehab News Agency on Friday, and reported by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), Sinwar said, “I say this loud and clear: God forbid, if a time comes when we have no choice but to watch our citizens breathe their final breaths, and when there are no ventilators – I say to (Israeli Defense Minister Naftali) Bennett that we will make six million Israeli settlers unable to breathe.”

Sinwar accused Israel and Bennett of having a “Merchant of Venice mentality,” a comment which has antisemitic overtones, due to its reference to Shylock, the Jewish lead character of the William Shakespeare play. Shakespeare’s portrayal of Shylock as a Jewish moneylender has been accused of appearing antisemitic due to stereotypes about Jews.

“Bennett, I refer you to the Book of Ezekiel, Chapter 17, to read what awaits you, and what awaits your filthy [Zionist] entity,” Sinwar declared. “Because the kind of language that you use can be expected only from someone who has a Merchant of Venice mentality. “The Merchant of Venice gave people loans, and when the time came, and they could not repay their debts, he started to cut off their flesh as payment for the money he had given them,” he said. “This is the common practice of Bennett, and of the entire Zionist system that has occupied our land.”

Sinwar also declared that the coronavirus pandemic was retribution for the decision by President Donald Trump to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May 2018.

“When I saw Trump signing his decision to allocate $2.2 trillion for the coronavirus response, I recalled how he had signed in the same manner his decision to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” Sinwar said in the interview. ” I said then: You and the Americans will pay the price for this unjust and criminal decision.”
